Bobshirt teams up with Eric Swisher from Chromeball for this special interview with Andy Jenkins. Andy talks about being the art director at Girl Skateboards, creating the first Girl series in 1993, getting his first job from a drawing contest, doing early skateboard graphics for bLind, World and 101, drawing crackpipes, Chocolate graphics, 3 decades of Girl skateboards and much more.
Mike Mo went ahead and re-digitized our film reels from Yeah Right in 4K. Sit back, turn on some tunes, and watch the uncut takes to the invisible board montage and more…
“Three decades of this shit. I am grateful and I am tired. I’ve learned the wild duality of anything worth creating. I’ve never been more frustrated with three people and I’ve never loved any three people more. I’ve learned the trials of fate at their most challenging and painful are all still gifts. Learning most everything as you go is so fulfilling and so dangerous. It’s a wonderful thing that you can do that in skateboarding.
Suffice to say as I learned and created alongside these guys, I have felt very fortunate. Thank you to the rad people that worked with us then and now. All the skaters that poured heart and soul into Girl from then and now. And thank you to my family for being the most supportive and loving pack of wolves.” – Megan Baltimore

“While joining the Girl team in 1993 as an amateur, Tony missed out on the original round of what’s become known as the 93 Til graphics. When Fergs pro model was retired in 2004, Girl hadn’t yet adopted the tradition of revisiting the 93 Til’s each season. We found it extra special to give Tone the 93 Til board he almost missed.
A reissue for Tony Ferguson has long been in the works. With so many classic graphics, picking a favorite was more than half the holdup. When we finally zeroed in on the 1996, Art In America board by Andy Jenkins, we knew it was the one.”

A Jasper Dohrs and Griffin Gass shared part. This one also gives you a little bit of a backstory on how Jasper and Griffin’s paths crossed at an early age and beautifully cross again as Girl & Preduce Skateboards launch their collaboration.

“Preduce has been friends with Malto and Brophy for years. On the last trip we were all on together pre COVID, Brophy said it would be rad if we could do a Girl and Preduce collab and I remember him hitting up Rick right away about it. I’ve been a fan of Girl from the start and grew up with the brand but I thought there was a very slim chance it could happen. So I was blown away when Rick replied right away and said he wanted to be part of the trip too for when the collab would happen. Griffin Gass grew up skating in Seattle with one of our riders Jasper Dohrs and he’s long overdue for a trip to Thailand. So we thought it made sense to make 4 boards for Brophy, Malto, Rick And Griffin. For the designs, our art director TRK wanted to play around with the OG Girl logo. He’s influenced by traditional Thai art you can find in Thai temples and sacred books that he revisits with a modern twist. He dressed the OG logo as traditional Thai dancers and hill tribe women from different regions of Thailand.”

“Atiba asked me about a year ago if I’d be into doing a board with his photos of Interpol and myself. Being that we had used their song “Obstacle 1” for my part in the video ‘Yeah Right’ I said of course! Neither Atiba or I thinking about the fact that Yeah Right was coming up on 20yr anniversary this year. Wow!.. I remember bringing the CD “Turn on The Bright Lights” to Ty Evans apartment in Hollywood.
I said to him. “Man I found this song of a great band and I don’t think a lot of people know of them yet. I really want to use this song!” and Ty loved it. He started editing to it right away. I had so much footage and it’s one of the best video parts I’ve had. So thank you Interpol and their management/label for your music. People still tell me to this day Yeah Right is what got them into Interpol and that genre. What an incredible feeling to piece together a video part.
Also I remember being so happy that Ty didn’t show me much of the video. I liked that. I wanted to be almost as surprised as someone who had no involvement. I had helped with a lot of skits so I had a feel for the video but at the premiere I was blown away by everyone’s skate footage. I had only witnessed a handful of my teammates tricks in person. Everyone’s skating was amazing. I am very proud to have skated so hard and worked so hard with our Girl/Chocolate family. Here’s to all the little things that make the big things happen. 🍻 Seasons like that in life are priceless.” – Brian Anderson
